What is arnold press vs shoulder press?

Arnold Press:

  • Named after Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • Targets the anterior and medial deltoids, as well as the triceps and upper chest
  • Performed sitting or standing, with dumbbells held at shoulder height, palms facing in
  • Movement involves rotating the palms outward as the weights are lifted, until the arms are fully extended overhead
  • Can be beneficial for those with shoulder impingement issues, as it allows for more range of motion

Shoulder Press:

  • Also known as the overhead press or military press
  • Targets the anterior and medial deltoids, as well as the triceps and upper chest
  • Can be performed with a barbell, dumbbells, or kettlebells
  • Movement involves pressing weight overhead until arms are fully extended
  • May put more stress on the rotator cuff and shoulder joint, and therefore should be performed with proper form and appropriate weight for each individual's strength and ability
